Qualifications:

Dag Goering qualified as a veterinarian in Germany, completed a doctorate on fish diseases in 1987 and subsequently served as a program coordinator and instructor for 4 years at Malaspina University College in Nanaimo. Maria Coffey studied at the University of Liverpool, England, graduating in 1973 with a BA Honours Degree in Geography and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education. She has had 12 years experience teaching Social Studies and ESL at high school and college level in England, Peru and Canada.

In 1991, a year-long around-the-world kayak expedition launched Dag and Maria into a life of freelance adventure journalism. From their home base on Protection Island, BC, they have been exploring, living and working in various far-flung corners of the globe, from Vietnam to the Solomon Islands to the West Coast of Ireland. They have recorded their experiences in several books, including A Boat in Our Baggage: Around the World with a Kayak (1994), Three Moons in Vietnam (1996), Sailing Back in Time (1996) and Visions of the Wild: A Voyage by Kayak around Vancouver Island (2001). Maria has also written Fragile Edge: Loss on Everest, and several books for children. Her most recent book, Where the Mountain Casts its Shadow: The Dark Side of Extreme Adventure, won the Jon Whyte Award for Mountain Literature at the 2003 Banff Mountain Book Festival and a 2004 National Outdoor Book Award.

Dag’s photographs have been internationally published in books and prominent newspapers and periodicals including National Geographic Adventure Magazine, Elle Magazine, The New York Times, The Guardian, Action Asia, and Outdoors Illustrated. In November 2004, The Banff Centre hosted his solo exhibition, Sacred Water.
